Springboard 12/3/08 -
We did our first dive in Springboard finally. What a majestic cave! This cave is accessible in one of two ways - either trudge through Spring Lake for about 3 hours having to lift your canoe full of gear over several trees, or do a guided dive there booked through Cave Adventurers. We did the guided dive option.
The cave is accessed through an opening in a spring run that is actually a siphon. The visibility here was about 10'. Not too far in the cave is a duck under that brings you into the actual Springboard system where you will find visibility about 100' or so. We headed to the right at the T just past the duck under and through a large fissure about 40-50' tall. The top part of the fissure is wide enough for sidemount divers. We swam to the end of the line and dropped down to the bottom where the bottom of the fissure extends to both side for about 20' or so under a flat ceiling. There are fossils embedded everywhere in the walls and ceilings of this passage.
We made it back to our T and headed the other way down the Distance Tunnel. This is a tube like passage that goes back for several hundred feet. We made it about 1900' before the dive was turned by a member of our team. Water temperature was 68 degrees. We did about a 90 minute run time with about 20 minutes of deco. This is definitely a cave we'll be going back to!

Troy Spring -
Blown out
With recent rains causing river levels to rise, Troy Spring is very tannic. Diving conditions are extremely poor with no visibility in the basin.

Hole in the Wall 6/10/10 -
Got back into the downstream section. This time no scooters. We did a swim dive back to about 1000' and spent a lot of time just searching the perimeter for passages. We did find a couple of jumps we weren't aware of and that aren't on the map (more survey work to be done, hopefully those lines are knotted!). We turned around and headed back, finding another small passage we also weren't aware of. Before ending the dive it was time to complete some unfinished work from the last dive. We put in almost 500' of knotted line in the side passage that was surveyed last weekend. Didn't quite make it to the end before running out of line so at least one more dive in there. Counted knots on the way back and updated the survey data from last week. Distance estimation was amazingly pretty close! Another dive or two and that project should be done and we can move onto the next jump.

Little River -
Little River is back open to diving, but conditions haven't been all that great. Visibility has been reported to be less than 20 feet and very hazy. The Mud Tunnel jump line cannot be seen from Table Rock.

Vortex Spring 1/24/10 -
We headed over to Vortex with a couple of students to work on some skills in the basin. We were in the water fairly early but conditions were already pretty poor. Visibility in the basin was 15 feet at best. The water temperature was also 67 degrees. This had little to do with the open water classes in the basin over the weekend. The panhandle has seen a lot of rain over the past week with rivers cresting above flood levels and blowing out many systems. While it's rare, if at all possible, for Vortex to blow out, the visibility will take a hit when there's a lot of rain. And that we've had. More rain in the forecast for this weekend, so it doesn't look like things will improve much.
